Here is how "Wine & Roses - Italian
Landscape Original Painting was created by Linda Paul
|

|
The
creative process in an interesting one. I was
playing with a rough sketch of a Tuscan villa
courtyard, with a fountain in the
foreground, pots of flowers, old shuttered doors
and a terrace overlooking a Italian landscape
framed by a beautiful climbing rose. I
kept being drawn to the just the upper left
corner of the sketch. That little piece was the
one that was speaking to me to be painting.
Listening to your heart and
instincts is one of the most important
parts of the creative process.

So, since I
was being drawn in that direction, I decided to
go with it and create a painting based on just
the corner. If the rough sketch does not project
a bit of magic and a fabulous spirit, the
finished painting won't either. I think there is
a very nice spirit in this scribble of a
drawing. I wanted to lightly sculpt all the
foreground items in a low relief, then have the the
background landscape be a soft
impressionist painting of fields and mountains. I
wanted a still
life on the table and possibly a basket of dream
wines on the stone terrace. This idea of basket
a wine has been percolating for a while, I just
did not have the the right setting for it worked
out in my mind. Some times it takes years for an
idea to find its home in a painting.

I transferred the
drawing to a large gessoed painting board, 36" x
30", and started the sculpting part of the
artwork. Its a little hard to see because at
this stage its white on white, but there is
enough shadow under the sculpted items to get the
idea. This is a really fun part of creating
the art work. I sculpted only the items in
the foreground, the rose vine, table (with still
life of a vases of roses, a wine glass and
grapes) and a basket of bread & wine on the
floor of the terrace Once the sculpting part of the
artwork is finished, I have to decide
what colors I will use. |

I have just started the
painting the artwork. I am creating a pale
impressionist Italian inspired landscape. I
don't know at the this point if I want the
background to stay soft and kind of dreamy
or if I want more intense color One
of the roses in my garden is a beautiful
cinnamon rose. Its colors go from a soft peach
to a deep rust and it does smell just like
cinnamon. I will try one of the roses in
these colors today and see how it works, then
the rest of the painting will take its cue from
there. |

Paintings will sometimes
take you in directions that you did not intend.
The cinnamon rose idea has changed to a
red/orange rose. It don't know if I will keep
the bit of silver blue at the top of the sky
either. |
