These original paintings are on maple boards which extend
3/4" out from the wall. The leaves are
sculpted in low bas-relief (about 1/8"). Each aspen leaf has been
gilded in either 24k gold or genuine copper or
silver. The paint is pure egg tempera made
from crushed stone and egg yolk. The paintings have
been sealed with several coats of an archival
varnish to protect them

Here is how "Quaking Aspen -
Series of 3 contemporary paintings by Linda Paul
were created
|
 |
So I am starting with
sketches. I want the three paintings to work
together,

I decided to do a little 8 x 10"
study painting to see where I am going.
This is a small section from the first sketch.
I sculpted the leaves in a very low bas-relief
of about 1/8". Then I applied real copper and
gold leaf to the sculpted aspen leaves and the
path through the trees. I put some pure silver
leaf on the trunks of the trees. I then
painted the background in pure egg tempera. |

In this picture you see one of the three panels
in my studio that I was working on. I
was in my garden the other day cutting back the
aspen a bit and decided to bring a branch in for
inspiration. Since its spring in the
Rockies, the leaves are green, but you can just
imagine them when they turn in fall.
I have sculpted the aspen leaves in low relief
and my next step is to start a base paint in egg
tempera. |
|

|
I have finished sculpting the aspen leaves on
all 3 paintings and now am building the under
color in rich red tones of pure egg tempera

I have gilded each aspen leaf in either 24 karat
(23.75k) real gold or in genuine copper. This
pure gold is very soft and hard to work with.
The tree trunks have pure silver leaf on them.
This is the ugly ducking phase of the painting.
My next step will be to work on the background
then distress the leaves and
start painting in pure egg tempera made from
crushed stone and egg yolk.
I have a long way to go on these paintings |

I am working on the background or "negative
space" which is as important as the main
elements or "positive space" |

. These paintings are getting
close to being done. I have a bit more detail
work to do on them. They absolutely glow with
luminosity |
About egg tempera paintings:
Linda Paul uses natural crushed stone & earth mixed with a bit of water and egg yolk to make her paint. Blues come from crushed lapis lazuli, greens from malachite & natural green earth found around Verona Italy. She uses fascinating colors which have been "lost" for hundreds of years & new colors which she has discovered in the Rocky Mountains. Her earth ochers come from the ancient mines of France & Italy.
