Need Kitchen Decorating Ideas?
This page shows before and after pictures of how an
uninspired cooking area can be revitalized by
removing one cabinet and adding a custom
kitchen backsplash and stainless/glass hood.
 |
Before
The customer sent in this
picture and asked, What can I do to rescue this
backsplash area?Artist Linda Paul looked
at the picture and suggested that the center
cabinet be removed and a new custom backsplash
be designed and customized to fit entire back
splash area and a new glass and stainless hood
be installed. The area needs light, life
and depth.
|
 |
Design Phase
The customers favorite Linda Paul painting was
Roses and Vines, which
perfectly compliments the black granite and
honey oak cabinets. So the artist set to
work on designing a custom tile mural to fit the
space. Linda created a mock up design so the
customer could get an idea of what the finished
custom mural would look like in their kitchen
The customer loved the design but wanted a few less
roses under the cabinets and a couple at the
very top. He also wanted the 2
granite side splashes replaced with matching
custom splashes So Linda got to work creating
the custom mural and backsplash on marble tile |
 |
Installation Phase Begins In this
picture, the
backsplash installation begins. The mural is being
installed by Tim Bertola. Tim has done several
projects for me in the Denver area and does an
excellent job with superb care and attention to
detail. You can contact Tim at 720-938-0511
tbertola@comcast.net
Installation begins at the bottom centre part of the mural and works
out and up from there. This is done because you
want any tile cuts to be on the edges where they
are less visible.
|
 |
Installation continues
The tile back splash installation continues
to the top and sides. This mural will be grouted
although some customers prefer to place
their tiles tight together and not grout.
The tiles are numbered on the back so Tim knows
which tiles goes where |

After picture with custom 60 x 42" mural
This 60" x 42" custom kitchen back splash mural of our
Italian Kitchen backsplash was
installed in this remodeled kitchen. The
tiles were cut into an arch at the top to
fit the existing black tile. Installing
two stove tops instead of a large one is a
great idea from both an economic
functional standpoint. |
After reviewing
several artists work we chose Linda Paul’s
“Italian Kitchen Window” to replace an existing
wallpaper cooking area backsplash.
The size requirements were not an issue as
Linda was able to customize to meet our needs.
To say that we are pleased with the result would
be a dramatic understatement.
The result exceeded our high expectations and the
“Italian Kitchen Window” is now the centerpiece of
our beautiful kitchen.

" I just wanted to say thank you for such attention to detail and craftsmanship. We just got our delivery a few days ago and I installed the mural today. Pictures online just don’t do it justice! We based the redesign for our kitchen and great room around this mural and the final result is exactly what I had in mind. This mural is the “keystone”. The project is finally complete! Thanks again! I’ll be showing off your work as long as we own this home. Greg & Heather Hamilton Decatur, IL |

Tile Design Tips
by Linda Paul: When planning a mural in your backsplash, try to match the shape and proportions of the mural to the space it is going in. Try to use a horizontal mural in a horizontal space and a vertical mural in a vertical space. It looks best if you can fill the space either completely with the mural or at least 75% occupy of the space. read more
You can easily mix tile sizes, types and shapes. If your mural does not completely fill your space, it looks best to put border tiles around it to transition to other tile types.
